Set File Explorer to automatically type into Search Box or Select an item in Windows 10

You can set File Explorer to automatically type into the Search Box or select the typed item in Windows 10, by changing the File Explorer Options. Although I am not sure, I think that this may be a new feature that has been added to Windows 10.

It works like this. Open File Explorer and navigate to say, your Documents folder. Now when you type any alphabet using your key board, where does the focus and your mouse pointer jump to? If it jumps to the Search Box, the you have the following setting enabled:

  • Automatically type into the Search Box

If the focus shifts to a file starting with that alphabet or number then you have the following setting enabled:

  • Select the typed item in the view

Type into Search Box or Select the typed item

To change your preferences you will have to open File Explorer Options – which was earlier called Folder Options – via Control Panel.

Once you open it, you will see the following window. Click on the View tab.

Under Advanced settings > When typing into list view, you will see the following options:

  1. Automatically type into the Search Box
  2. Select the typed item in the view.

Select the one you want and click on Apply. The change will take effect immediately.
