OBS Studio is a powerful screen recorder software for Windows PCs. It comes with numerous features and allows you to stream videos and record your screen. When you install OBS Studio for the first time, you have to configure its settings. The default settings of OBS Studio do not give you the desired output. If your OBS screen recording is blurry when moving, this article will help you fix this issue.
OBS screen recording is blurry when moving
If your OBS screen recording is blurry when moving, you need to configure the following settings in OBS Studio on your Windows 11/10 PC:
- Bitrate
- Video Resolution and Frames Per Second (FPS)
- Video Encoder Settings
Let’s see all these settings one by one.
1] Bitrate
Bitrate is the most important setting in a screen recorder software. It directly impacts the quality and file size of screen recordings. It is directly proportional to your screen recording quality, which means a higher bitrate improves the video quality. However, increasing the bitrate also results in a larger file size, which means even short videos consume more space on your hard disk.
You can calculate the file size of your video. For example, if you set it to 10000 Kbps (Kilobits per second), the video output will be calculated as:
[10000 Kbps/(1024*8)] = 1.2207 MBps 1.2207*60 seconds = 73.24 MB.
Here, Kbps stands for kilobits per second, and MBps stands for Mega Bytes per second. Hence, according to the above formula, your recorded video of 1 minute duration will have a size of approximately 73.24 MB. In this way, you can calculate the size of your recorded videos.
The following instructions will help you change the bitrate:
- Open OBS Studio settings.
- Select Output on the left side.
- Select Output Mode to Advanced.
- Now, switch to the Recording tab.
- Scroll down to the bottom and enter the desired Bitrate in the Encoder Settings section.
If you do not see the Encoder Settings section, the Use Stream Encoder option might be selected in the Video Encoder. Test your recorded videos with different bitrates to find which one works well for you.
2] Video resolution and Frames Per Second (FPS)
The next setting you need to change is your video resolution and FPS. Follow these instructions:
- Open OBS Settings.
- Select the Video tab on the left side.
- Select the highest Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution.
- Just below these settings, you will see the FPS setting.
- Click Apply.
The Base (Canvas) Resolution is your display resolution, and the Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution of the recorded video. The Scaled resolution should be the same as the Canvas resolution. If you select the lower Scaled resolution, OBS Studio will use a Downscale filter, due to which you will not get the desired output.
The next setting is FPS. Select the highest available FPS for your screen recordings. In most cases, the highest FPS value on OBS Studio is 60.
3] Video Encoder Settings
Video Encoder settings also play a crucial role in improving the quality of OBS Screen recordings. If you have a dedicated graphics card, selecting it as a Video Encoder will significantly improve the quality of your recorded videos.
Follow these instructions:
- Open OBS Studio Settings.
- Select the Output category from the left side.
- Select Advanced in Output Mode and then go to the Recording tab.
- Under the Recording Settings section, select Slick Video Encoder and select your graphics card from the list of available options.
- Click Apply and then click OK.
That’s it. I hope this helps.
