If you use Paint.NET on your computer, you can convert CR2 images through it. However, to do that, you will be required to install an additional plugin.
Paint.Net doesn’t natively support camera raw images. Hence, you need to add an additional plugin to make it open, edit, and convert raw images. There are multiple raw image plugins for Paint.Net available on the internet. We will be using this plugin called RAW FileType from forums.getpaint.net. Let us see how to use this plugin to convert CR2 images to PNG, JPG, and other formats in Paint.NET.
How to convert CR2 images in Paint.NET?
To start with, make sure you have Paint.NET already installed on your system. After that, download the RAW FileType plugin from forums.getpaint.net. Once downloaded, extract the ZIP folder and from the extracted folder, copy the following files and folders:
- RawFileType.dll
- RawFileTypeOptions.txt
- LibRaw
Now, open File Explorer using Win+E and navigate to the FileTypes folder in the installation directory of Paint.NET. By default, you will find it at the following location: C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\FileTypes. Next, paste the previously copied files and folder in this location.
After that, start the Paint.NET application and click on the File > Open option to import the source CR2 image. You can now edit the image if you want. Once done, go to the File menu and press the Save as option. In the appeared dialog, you can set the Save as type to a supported image format like PNG, JPG, BMP, TIFF, TGA, WebP, etc. Finally, click on the Save button to convert the CR2 image.
