Turn your Windows laptop into a wireless hotspot with Connectify

Connectify is a newly released application that allows you to create a Wi-Fi hotspot WITHOUT a Wi-Fi router. This means that you can share your internet connection with others through your laptops wi-fi adapter.

All your friends, co-workers or users having wi-fi enabled devices can connect to the internet through the wi-fi hotspot your laptop will create. You can also keep your wi-fi hotspot secure by password-protected WPA2 Encryption.

Connectify for Windows

Basic Requirements:

  • A laptop/desktop running Windows 7/8/10.
  • A Wi-Fi card.
  • Connectify software.

The main plus point of this software is that its a freeware and you don’t have to pay for using or downloading it. The other features are:

  1. Your wireless access point hotspot will be encrypted with WPA-2 encryption only. It’s as strong as your password will be.
  2. The Ad Hoc mode hotspots are protected with WEP encryption.
  1. You need Windows 7/8/10 in order to run it. Windows 7 Starter Edition is not supported as of now, as it lacks some of the features Connectify utilizes.
  2. Older versions of Windows are not compatible.

UPDATE: Connectify is no longer free.

Take a look at WiFi HotSpot Creator which is free – or then here is a list of some more free WiFi HotSpot software that may interest you.

Per the Connectify home page, this software is compatible with XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Clearly Connectify Hotspot 2018 is the superior product. I tried 4 others and only one worked out of the box and it was marginal concerning setup guidance and tech support. Connectify worked first time, had handheld setup, and tech support (via a knowledge base and FAQs) was far better than any other I looked at. Yes it isn’t free but a trial is available and a promotion is available for $10.49 or $5.99 for the 2018 version (with updates to the end of year).

However, even Connectify doesn’t address the problem of forcing the hotspot to use the 5 GHz band (for those dual band capable). Anyone know of a product or procedure to get a 5 GHz hotspot?
