BS1 Enterprise Accounting: Accounting freeware for medium business

BS1 Enterprise Accounting software is created by Trevor Davis for Davis Software. Davis Software has over 30 years of experience developing accounting, manufacturing and distribution software. By 1997 the first version of BS1 software was released and is now being used in 80 countries worldwide. They have a couple of software suites, among which BS1 Enterprise Accounting freeware has limited features for single user. If you need the additional features, you need to upgrade.

Customization and Delphi source code is available for several databases. Before I get into the details, please remember when it comes to accounting I have zero knowledge. I’m just listing the features announced by the developers and the Help document. So if a feature doesn’t work or if you’re not sure I won’t be able to help you figure it out.

BS1 Enterprise Accounting

The application itself opens in Compact Mode, like a toolbar. From here, you can select the views you want and keep it. When you open the application it will ask you to disable the desktop icons for the better usability.

The main features that BS1 Enterprise Accounting offers are:

  • General Ledger
  • Accounts Payable
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Inventory
  • Sales Analysis
  • Bank Reconciliation

You can open an application from the drop-down list sets the toolbar to the four most frequently used options. Examples are: AR toolbar has buttons for Customers, Invoices, Payments, and Reports. For example, the Sales order can printed out for customer’s approval, when the order is approved it change to order and printed out by the shipping department and the invoice get created automatically with the shipping data.

Scheduling of shipments, purchasing and manufacturing is facilitated by a report showing current inventory levels, sales orders, purchase orders and manufacturing orders. We can define our own financial statements thought the setup process. The software is also bundled with a sample data and there is an optional Getting Started wizard to assist with entering initial live data.

When you first open the application, it will give you a choice to select the Sample data or create a new one. I would recommend you go through the sample data to get a better understanding of the application.

To conclude, it looks like a decent application with some necessary features say for someone who want to learn to use an accounting software. I’m not sure the free version ideal for small business companies since the software is limited to 30 days until the program is purchased, or as a free single-user edition with some features disabled.   1. The problem is, it seems, that the website is unclear about precisely what’s disabled in the free personal editions. I sent the dev an email asking precisely what are the differences, along with suggesting to him that he needs to be painfully clear about it on his site (and that if he made it clear somewhere, it’s not clear enough); and that he needs to have a comparison table like virtually every other website out there that deigns to ask people for their money in exchange for a product or service.

    We’ll see if he responds; and if he specifies the differences, I’ll post them there.
