How to center your taskbar icons in Windows 7

Give your Windows 7 a different look! The program icons on the Windows 7 by default are situated on the left side on the taskbar, next to your Start orb. But if you’d like them to appear in the center of the taskbar and maybe give it a dock kind of a look, here is what you need to do.

Create an empty folder in your Documents folder, say MTTB. Next right click on the taskbar and unlock it. Again right click on it and select Toolbar > New toolbar. Select the empty folder MTTB.

Now right click on the new toolbar and uncheck Show Text and Show Title.

Next drag it (dotted separator) to the left side, between the start orb and taskbar icons and release it.

Center align the taskbar icons. Lock the taskbar.

Thats it!

Interesting but with today’s widescreen monitors it makes more sense to have a vertical taskbar. I suspect the only reason people don’t do it is force of habit. It seemed a bit strange for me at first when I put it on the vertical left (I’m right handed) but I got used to it pretty quickly and have never looked back.

I agree with Ben. The Windows 7 taskbar works well in vertical orientation (better than the older Windows taskbar), and it’s a better use of screen space on widescreen displays.
I too was a little nervous about changing the habits of years, but I’m not going back to a horizontal taskbar now.

I found it a little strange vertical-left but I figured out how to use momentum on my laptop touch pad so all I need is one flick and I’m there, although if you set it to hide and return on mouse-over then you get most screen space back anyway.
