Fix Failed to acquire a license Autodesk error
If Autodesk failed to acquire a license, follow the solutions mentioned below.
- Restart the app
- Update Autodesk license service
- Install the latest version of Sign-On Component or Identity Manager
- Resolve HSMWork error
- Check the job in the queue
- Allow the program through the antivirus or firewall
Let us discuss them in detail.
1] Restart the app
First, you need to reboot the application causing this issue, as mentioned in the error message. Sometimes, the product fails to access the license due to a glitch; restarting it will allow it to re-attempt the same. So, open the Task Manager, right-click on the app, and select End Task. Make sure to kill all the Autodesk-related processes as well. Once done, start the app and see if the issue persists.
2] Update Autodesk license service
The Autodesk Licensing Service is a component used by Autodesk software to manage and validate software licenses. It ensures that the software is properly licensed and authorized for use. As mentioned in the error message, there is some issue with the license, so, it might be that the license has expired. So, go to autodesk.com and update the license. Once done, open the same product and see if the issue is resolved.

3] Install the latest version of Single Sign-On Component or Identity Manager
Both Single-On Component and Identity Manager are authentication components to log into Autodesk products, the only difference is that SSO is used by Autodesk 2023 and earlier, whereas, Identity Manager is for Autodesk 2024.
We need to make sure that the latest versions of these two components are installed on your system. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below.
- First of all, close all the Autodesk services from the Task Manager.
- Then, open Autodesk Access Update and connect to your account.
- Go to My Updates.
- Look for “Single Sign On Component-V13.8.6-2020.x SecurityFix English-US 64-Bit (Windows)” or “Identity Manager 1.0 1.12.0 English-US 64-Bit (Windows)”; click on Update.
Once updated, check if the issue is resolved.
4] Resolve HSMWorks error
If you see Failed to acquire license for AutoDesk HSMWorks, the user doesn’t have the necessary permissions. To resolve it, follow the steps mentioned below.
- Update HSMWorks if updates are available.
- Right-click HSMWorks and select “Run as Administrator”; click on Yes when the UAC prompt appears.
- If the “Let’s Get Started” screen appears, select your license type to activate HSMWorks.
- If not, go to knowledge.autodesk.com to see how to reset the license.
However, the problem continues, create a new local administrator account to test HSMWorks.
Also, if Inventor HSM was installed without a license, try uninstalling the HSM add-on, restart Inventor, and test again.
5] Check the job in the queue
Next up, we are going to check the job in the queue and take the necessary steps as per the result. Follow the steps mentioned below.
- In the Value Client, go to Tool, and then go to Job Qeueu
- Now, in the Job Server Queue, list of columns, then, right-click, and select Customize View.
- Then, go to Customize View > Fields.
- Now, in the Select available fields from drop-down, select All job Properties.
- Select the Job Processor and then click on Add.
- Click on Ok
- In the Job Processor column, the Windows Machine name should be the same as the name of your system, and there would be cmd.exe and hostname processes running.
In case the Job Processor name is different, stop the Job Processor on the other machine with a separate license.
6] Allow the program through the antivirus or firewall
A security program can interfere and cause issues for you such as the one in question. We can’t ask you to permanently disable it, instead, you can turn off the antivirus or Windows firewall temporarily.
If you are able to process the job, you can allow Autodesk and other related processes through the firewall.
7] Reinstall Autodesk License
If all else fails, we will reinstall the Autodesk license service. If it is corrupted, Autodesk will not be able to access the license, which will cause this error. To do this, follow the steps mentioned below.
- In the File Explorer, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\AdskLicensing.
- Now, run the uninstall.exe as an administrator.
- This will run the uninstaller and all the content of the folder will be deleted.
- Now, install the Autodesk license from the link mentioned in the second solution and then run it.
Now, check if the issue is resolved.
