Stop Yahoo from scanning your email & displaying personalized ads

You can stop Yahoo from scanning your email & displaying personalized ads. You can do this by opting out of this service from the Yahoo Ad Interest Manager. Yahoo has been one of the oldest players in the dot-com era. It was one of the most famous services along with AOL when launched in 1996. Their main feature was to index the Internet. Then came in Yahoo mail and more services that dominated the Internet in its early times. But Yahoo slowly started to fade out.

In 2008, Microsoft offered Yahoo for $45 Billion for acquisition. But Yahoo bluntly refused the offer and was sold to Verizon in 2016 for almost 10% of its valuation done by Microsoft at around $5 Billion only. Before that, they killed the classic Yahoo mail in June of 2013 forcing users to switch to the new Yahoo mail experience, but as the history says, it did not work out very well for them.

Even after being acquired by Verizon, Yahoo works fine with the dominance of Google, Apple, and Microsoft on the Internet. This does not stop them from scanning its users’ emails. They do this scanning to find their topics of interests and to get to know their users. This is something similar to what Google does with the users of Gmail.

Yahoo says that, in the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy which almost everyone ignores and agrees to, they have clearly stated that the user is accepting the “acceptance of automated content scanning and analyzing of your communications content”. But fortunately, you can opt out of this scan and just continue using the services on Yahoo Mail.
