Know what is taking up space on hard drive on Windows with WizTree
WizTree is a freeware for Windows that lets you scan your computer and build a beautiful colored treemap. Treemap is a pictorial representation of a tree data structure that can give you a detailed view of the size occupied by each branch and root of the tree. In this case, it depicts the size of each file and folder.
WizTree also lets you browse the results in a normal, convenient list view. To get started, select the drive you want to scan. Hit the Scan button, and the program will quickly generate results.
You can view the results in two formats, the first and most popular being the Tree View. This lets you view the actual directory tree and the corresponding treemap. Choose Tree View if you want to see which folder or its contents take up most of your hard disk space.
You can sort the results by the percentage size of its parent, the size it occupies, the number of items, and the last modified date. Selecting a record in the tree view will also highlight it in the treemap, making it easier to visualize the results.
Similarly, selecting a box in the treemap highlights the record in the directory tree. From both the directory tree and treemap, you can see which folders and files take up most of the disk space. Then you can make informed decisions about which ones to delete.
You can also get a breakdown by file format. You can easily review which file types take up the most space and target them directly. By default, WizTree doesn’t include free space in the test results, but you can enable it in the options.
WizTree also includes strong export features, letting you export scan results as CSV files or the treemap as a PNG. You can also choose color schemes and zoom in or out of the treemap.
Right-clicking an item in the view brings up the original context menu plus additional WizTree options. So you can use WizTree as a file explorer with added capabilities.
The other view in which you can view scan results is called the File View. File View lets you view information about each file individually. Again, you can sort records by size, percentage of the drive, attributes, and last modified timestamp.
The program also offers several customization options that let you easily control the attributes of the scan results.
