If you have landed on this page, it means that you have successfully upgraded your PC to the latest version of Windows 10 after installing the Feature Update successfully. Awesome! Here is a list of few things to do after you upgrade your operating system to the latest feature version. You may need to enable some new features & re-check old settings.
Things to do after you upgrade Windows 10 to the latest version
1] Windows 10 may have disabled some of your incompatible software. Check if all your software are working properly – especially your security software. Windows 10 also loves to change default programs at times. You might want to check if your defaults too. I have experienced both these events happening.
2] Check on the Choose how upgrades are delivered and ensure that your settings have not been changed. If you wish, you may move the slider to Off position to turn off Windows Update Delivery Optimization.
3] Check the Notifications and Action Center. See if there are pending things you need to complete. Click on them for more details. Check if your Windows 10 is activated.
4] If you used the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant to upgrade, you may want to uninstall it via your Control Panel.
5] Check if your Cortana is working. Some have reported that Cortana went dead after upgrading. See this post if Cortana is not working. The Note which appears below the image there may help you.
6] Check out Edge browser. It has many improvements – see if you want to install any Extensions. Maybe you want to even change its default Downloads folder.
7] Open Windows Defender Security Center settings. If you use it as your default antivirus, you may want to check the Enhanced Notifications settings and familiarize yourself with the Offline Scan feature. If you use third-party antivirus software, you want to turn on Defender Periodic Scanning.
8] If you need to delete more files and folders after the upgrade to Windows 10, you could search for Disk Cleanup, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator. You will see an option Previous Windows installation. Check this option. When you select this option, the Disk Cleanup tool will delete the Windows.old folder as well as the $Windows.~BT folder, but not the $Windows.~WS folder.
9] Enable the Use my sign in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update setting for Windows Update.
10] Boostland mentions in the Comments section that his System Restore got disabled. So please check if your System Restore function is disabled. If it is, you need to enable System Restore right away, as it is a very useful feature.
11] Check if your OneDrive Files On-Demand feature is turned on.
12] Open Windows Defender Security Center and turn on Exploit Protection and use Controlled Folder Access feature.
13] Take a look at the new features in Windows 10 and start using Timeline. Take a look at the File Explorer Dark Mode, the new Clipboard, the Screen Sketch Tool, and more.
14] Set data limits for WiFi.
15] Enable and configure Focus Assist.
