Something happened and we couldn’t start the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

Different versions of Windows 10 are priced differently. The Windows 10 Pro version is considerably more expensive than the Windows 10 Home version. Thankfully, Microsoft allows its users to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro for a reasonable cost, rather than buying the whole license again.

However, while trying to upgrade Windows 10 through the Microsoft Store, users have reportedly encountered the error. Something happened, and we couldn’t start the upgrade. The issue is caused by problems with the Microsoft Store or key authorization. Try the following solutions sequentially to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Run the Microsoft Accounts Troubleshooter
  2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
  3. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter
  4. Reset the Windows Store cache
  5. Re-register the Windows Store app
  6. Contact Microsoft support.

1] Run the Microsoft Accounts Troubleshooter

Run the Microsoft Accounts Troubleshooter and see if this helps.

2] Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and see if that works for you.

3] Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter

The Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter is an excellent tool for scanning problems related to the Windows Store on your Windows 10 system and resolving them. The procedure to run the Windows Store apps troubleshooter is as follows:

Click on the Start button and then go to Settings > Updates and Security > Troubleshoot.

Find the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter from the list and run it.

Restart the computer and check if you can upgrade the version of Windows 10 now.

4] Reset the Windows Store cache

One of the major reasons behind problems with the Windows Store is a corrupt Windows Store cache. In such a situation, we can clear or reset the Windows Store cache to resolve the problem.

5] Re-install/re-register the Windows Store app

If the above-mentioned solutions didn’t work, you could consider re-installing the Windows Store app. Since the app is an in-built one, you cannot uninstall it like normal third-party programs. The process would require the use of Powershell commands.

6] Contact Microsoft support

Since you have purchased the key for Windows 10 Pro version, you are eligible for the upgrade and support for it. Once we have isolated all causes with the Microsoft Store app, the only problem could be with the key. To resolve the same, you could contact Microsoft support.
