What is SkyDrive Pro? Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog explains!

Since Microsoft released Office 2013 and made it preview version available for download a couple of days back, the online world apart from  discussing the new Office 2013 Preview, was also abuzz with all kinds of speculations about SkyDrive Pro. As users installed the Office 2013 Preview version, they sighted SkyDrive Pro when they right clicked on any folder to see it in the context menu – although the context menu was grayed out.

You could also see it in the Office 2013 Preview, in the ‘Save As’ option >  ‘Add a Place’. This option for Office 365 SharePoint, provided the option, with the same icon .

So one could guess that it was something related to SharePoint.

What is SkyDrive Pro

Though Microsoft has not specifically talked about SkyDrive Pro, during the Office 2013 Preview launch, some details were reveled by the Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog.

SkyDrive Pro makes it easy it to work with your documents in SharePoint – save, sync, share and collaborate are all drop-dead simple. The name conveys the simplicity and increased consistency with our SkyDrive consumer cloud service while reinforcing the “Pro” features of SharePoint like social networking, collaboration, search, metadata, workflow and compliance. Click “Sync” on a SharePoint library and you will get the documents offline in the Windows Explorer, Office applications and more. SkyDrive Pro is part of both the SharePoint service in Office 365 and server.

SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro

Some more bits of information were provided at our MVP Discuss list, which was not under NDA. This cleared the doubts about SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro.

SkyDrive is available free to individuals and will be available seamlessly as part of Office 365 Home Premium along with 20GB of additional storage (Preview is available now). SkyDrive is for people to sync their personal files across their devices and to the cloud.

SkyDrive Pro is a feature in the next release of SharePoint that allows organizations to provision and manage personal cloud storage for their employees. It will be available as a service with Office 365 Small Business, Office 365 Enterprise and on-premises with the new version of SharePoint. SkyDrive Pro is for people to sync their work files across devices and to their enterprise cloud (SharePoint). People can easily see personal and work files from both places together in Windows Explorer and Office apps.

I hope this clarifies the matter to some extent at least.

So Skydrive Pro is a different way of accessing the WebDAV interface that is already in your MySite in Sharepoint. I guess that makes sense – I have been using it for some time, but need to map a drive to do so easily, this would be a nice improvement.

  2. Office365

I agree with Jeremy. This feature would be a very nice improvement; i’m all about having a seamless experience with Office for a change.

I am using SharePoint Online and SkyDrive Pro to sync documents. I would like to know if it is possible to rename the sharepoint folder that SkyDrive Pro creates by default when you sync a document library.Currently it sync my docs under the following location

I need to get rid of the sharepoint name so that the path reads,

Anyone done this before? please assist.

    Hi VasuDevG

Thanks for the links you provided however my question remain unswered.

Let me rephrase, I have synced my docs and they appear to be located on this path c:/users/username/sharepoint
    Note the sharepoint folder.

It does not matter whether I change the location to be different from the default one, the ‘sharepoint’ folder still forms part of the path. I want to rename the sharepoint folder to a a different name.

I dont have a problem saving anywhere on my machine but would like to see a more meaningful name on the physical location and not the generic ‘sharepoint’ folder forming part of my location.

    Hope this clarifies it better.
