The Windows Club

Nokia Lumia owners you are not getting Windows Phone 8, its Windows Phone 7.8 update

I have seen many a updates from current Lumia users on Facebook saying that they are just waiting for Windows Phone 8 and are excited to see it running on their Lumia smartphone.

But with no offence, I have to say all of you that Windows Phone 8 will not be available on your current Lumia smartphones. Nokia Lumia 900, Lumia 800, Lumia 710 and Lumia 610 are not upgradable to Windows Phone 8. You are going to get something which looks like Windows Phone 8 but not the real package.

Microsoft and Nokia did not dare to anger their existing Lumia consumers, so another update version named as Windows Phone 7.8 will be made available for current Lumia smartphone models.

Windows Phone 7.8 update

This new update will bring some of the new Windows Phone 8 features like the start screen – and download new apps from companies like Zynga, whose Words with Friends and Draw Something will be available in autumn. It’s just like a Windows 8 theme for Windows Phone 7.5 running phones.

With Windows Phone 8 sharing the Windows 8 core, millions of Windows developers will also be able to develop for Windows Phone ecosystem. Lumia customers can expect thousands more apps to be introduced across Windows Phone platform.

Windows Phone 8 sports capability to support dual core processors, HD display with higher resolution, NFC, external memory support, and native video calling. The current Lumia phones are having low hardware configuration as compare to the requirements of Windows Phone 8, so it’s not possible for Microsoft or Nokia to port Windows Phone 8 fully on Windows Phone 7.5 Lumia smartphones.

Existing Lumia smartphones will not be able to run apps which will be developed ‘dedicatedly’ for Windows Phone 8. Consider Windows Phone 7.8, as your last major software update – which is going to be available soon.
