Till recently MaxiDisk was a part of UniBlue PowerSuite, which helps maintain and improve the performance of your Windows computer. However, lately, the company has now started selling MaxiDisk as a separate product.
As is with most Uniblue products like SpeedUpMyPC, DriverScanner and Powersuite Pro, the UI is quite simple to understand and use. On the home page which opens on launching the software, you will see an Overview of the state of your hard disk. There are three other tabs – Disk Scan, Gain space and Manage.
Next, you will see the Disk Scan tab. But it makes more sense to use the Gain Space module first always and remove the temporary files and unwanted clutter on your hard disk, before defragmenting your hard disk.
Temporary Files in Windows are those files whose use is only temporary and become redundant once the task at hand is completed. Such temporary files are created to hold data temporarily while a file is being created or processed or used.
While you can always use the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup Tool to remove junk files, MaxiDisk offers to do a more detailed job. MaxiDisk lets you scan for Junk files, old backups which can be removed and identifies large files, which you can compress. The Junk Files tab will offer to delete files from the Recycle Bin, Windows temporary files and Temporary Internet files, to help free up disk space. Under Removal of old backups, you will be able to remove the old system restore points and some old Windows update backup files.
Unfortunately, there is no way to find out which junk files MaxiDisk 2013 removes.
Once you have removed the junk files from your computer, you can now go to the Disk Scan tab and scan your hard drives for fragmented files. Disk Defragmentation will analyze the hard disk and recommend a defragmentation if it is required. The built-in Windows defrag tool does a good job and satisfies most of us, but if you are looking for a third-party shareware, you can check out MaxiDisk.
Clicking on Scan will commence the operation, and in a while, you will be presented with the results. If your disk is defragmented (Read: Why does file defragmentation take place) you can press the Defrag button to continue with the operation. If Disk defragmentation is not required, you will be accordingly informed.
Under the Manage tab, you can change the program settings, scan settings and see system information about your computer.
You can download MaxiDisk and use it as a trial for 30 days or buy it. Along with it, the company is also giving SystemTweaker, an easy-to-use Windows tweaking tool, FREE.
