Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free: Review & Download

Among the several  3rd-party free anti-malware programs available today, one of the most popular one’s is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  Malwarebytes’ is fast, light-weight and yet very effective. It is updated several times in a day. Not only will it scan your computer quickly, but it will also remove any malware it finds, completely free!

I decided to check out Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free version.

UPDATE: Read Malwarebytes 3.0 Review.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware review

I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the link provided at the end of the article. Double-click on the downloaded setup file (mbam-setup.exe) to commence installation.  The program installs quickly. During the installation process, keep following the prompts to ensure you are on the right path. Also, do not forget to leave the following checked:

  1. Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  2. Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware checked.

Once the installation is complete, your anti-malware will now automatically start. A small message prompting you to update the program before performing a scan will appear on your computer screen. Allow the program to automatically update itself and press the OK button at the end.

The main Window of Malwarebytes will now appear. It displays the main menu of the program. This includes,

  • Quick Scan
  • Full Scan
  • Flash Scan

Perform a scan of your choice! At the end you get a report. If any malware is found, you are notified. You are also taken back to the main Scanner screen.

If any infections were found during the scanning, Malwarebytes removes them and adds the removed items to the programs quarantine. While removing infections, MBAM may request you to reboot. Allow it to do so.

Later, continue with the rest of the steps. Also, the program will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

The update module allows you to check for updates. You can check for updates manually or automatically via his module. For complete protection it is necessary, your database is up-to-date.

Logs module lets you trace all recent program’s activity.

Ignore List

You can add exceptions to the ‘Ignore List’ so the ‘Scanner’ and ‘Protection’ module ignores them in future.

Here you can set up your own settings. The Password set feature is available in the license version only. If you want, you can buy the paid version.

The latest version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware now has new logos and icons and displays Windows 8 Start screen notifications. It shows better compatibility with many other security products in real-time.

Unlike several other free anti-virus software, its free version however, does not offer Real-Time active malware protection from known threats as well as Heuristic Protection from new zero day malware. So it is best to have it installed as a second stand-alone antivirus scanner just in case you need a second opinion.

Using MBAM free (as well as other manual non-res AV scanners) since July 2012; resident is VIPRE antivirus (not whole CIS); MBAM performs without lag to what VIPRE can find on usb’s; MBAM is portable whereas VIPRE is not so I can take MBAM to someone else if their PC infected. On Aspire 5736Z Windows 7 Home Prem 64 bit, one of the “more tools” MBAM includes…anti-rootkit beta…sometimes detects resident av/firewall drivers as malware and asks to remove or continue (but doesn’t say what particular it has found), but did very well in scanning mbr and partitions for bootkit traces. I’ve seen no conflicts on OS due to running MBAM scans in presence of VIPRE. Hope that’s useful.

Certainly, yes! Your last statement is useful. I guess, i haven’t included that point. Thanks for the additional information.

Thanks for the review! I’ll try this if I ever get unhappy with my antivirus (I use Unthreat Antivirus) though I don’t think it’ll happen anytime soon. Thanks!

Thanks for the review. But when he writes about the program it is necessary to mention the other tools. Among these tools specifically to focus attention on the Chameleon.
