We couldn’t set Google search engine as your default in Edge browser

Microsoft Edge browser in Windows 10 ships with Bing as the default search engine. While Bing Search is good in itself, some want to change it to some other search engine like Google, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc. Edge will allow you to change the default search engine provided it supports the OpenSearch standard.

We have already seen how to set Google or any other search engine as the default in Edge browser, but when I recently wanted to change my Search from Bing to Google, I found that I was unable to and Edge threw up the following error message – We couldn’t set Google Search as your default in Edge browser. Try again later.

I did try a couple of times but that did not help. Well if you face this issue, and can’t change the search engine, here are few things you may want to try, in no particular order.

1] Open the following folder and delete its contents:


Now try and see if it helps.

2] Reset Edge browser to its default state and then try and see if that worked.

3] Disable Cortana temporarily and see if that helps.

4] Change your Internet Connection and see. I did that. I was using a cabled broadband connection when I received the error message. But when I changed my internet connection to a WiFi connection, I was immediately able to set Google as the default.
