Empty Folder Cleaner: Deletes Empty Folders and Empty Files in Windows 10

Over time, the number of empty folders on our computer may grow; and so could zero bit or empty files. It therefore, might be a good idea to spare some time occasionally in cleaning or removing them. Doing so may not save disk space, but will definitely allow us to reduce the unwanted clutter and can also be considered as a good house-keeping habit, in a way. Empty Folder Cleaner, as the name suggests, helps you find and delete such empty folders from your Windows 10/8/7 PC.

Which files & folders are deleted by Empty Folder Cleaner

Empty Folder Cleaner deletes empty folders and folders that have empty sub-folders. Likewise, folders that have files of zero file size are also deleted. It also deletes folders, which include specified junk files like thumbs.db, desktop.ini, etc. Such folders hold or contain nothing and are therefore of no value. Empty Folder Cleaner cleans such files and folders.

Empty Folder Cleaner

Step 1 – Empty Folder Cleaner is available in 2 editions,

  1. Simple executable File (19.5 MB size)
  2. Portable file (11.2MB size)

Step 2 – Choose the desired edition and download it.

Step 3 – Choose a destination folder to install the application and click on ‘Next’ option.

Step 4 – In a new window that will pop-up on your computer screen, select the additional options, and click on the ‘Install’ option.

Step 5 – Once done, specify the folders to be scanned. Any empty folders, if found, are displayed in a tree and a list structure. One can select and delete empty folders of the empty folder scan result by clicking on ‘Delete Empty Folders’ option. Please check the items you want deleted and only then click on the Delete button – when you are sure you want to delete them.

It is also possible to select the folders to scan with a right-click in Windows Explorer.

Empty folders can be deleted permanently, deleted to the Recycle Bin, or can be stored as a backup compressed in a zip file. If you want, each deletion can be undone. To be safe, its best to set it to delete it to the Recycle Bin.

If you would like to specify the maximum folders scan depth, deletion mode, or other options, you can access the ‘Options’ menu.

Empty Folders Cleaner is different from other similar programs in a way that it can unlock folders using the Free File Unlocker engine before trying to delete them. The program has been translated into 38 languages and is compatible with Windows 10/8/7.

UPDATE: This software (even the portable version) will try to install other software too. An unsigned process Installmanager.exe made my KIS squeal.

A program called Search Suggestor, which is bundled, also gets installed – if you fail to uncheck the option. As a result, we rather not recommend this software.

Go here if you are looking for better free software to delete empty folders.

Why not just use the free app. Glary utilities, it does a great job and won’t delete folders that your software retains.

  2. This one is free too… and yes Glary’s is nice too, I have used it. 🙂

This one should come with a goverment health warning!
It managed to wipe out all of my files and folders in my personal map, all file and folders in the shared map. System restore was futile they are gone!

My Norton Antivirus popped up a threat in the portable version. Even the portable version said it needed to install other software on my pc. Since when did portable versions need to install anything…hence the term portable. Plus, after I actually got it to run it wanted to delete folders like the Programs folder that is full of other stuff.

At the very least you could warn us about the junk it tries to install. But, worse than that after installing the “portable” program, with the junk NOT selected, I found a new non-portable program installed! Really????

  6. Apologies! The post has been updated, and de-linked from its home page. We’d rather go with these safer options: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/free-software-delete-empty-folders-windows-7
