After observing consumers interest in Windows 8, especially after the release of Windows 8 Release Preview, and to prevent interested users, who may be in the process of buying a new laptop, from waiting for the release of Windows 8, Microsoft recently announced the availability of Windows 8 Upgrade Offer for customers planning to purchase Windows 7-based PC between June 2012 and February 2013.
UPDATE: 20 Aug, 2012. The offer is now open and available in 140 countries.
Windows Upgrade Offer:
The Upgrade Offer will enable any individual to purchase an upgrade coupon for Windows 8 Pro for $14.99 on one precondition – A customer must buy a new PC preinstalled with,
- Windows 7 Home Basic
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- Windows 7 Professional
- Windows 7 Ultimate
Owners of the newly purchased PCs should possess a matching and valid OEM Certificate of Authenticity to receive a low-cost upgrade to Windows 8 Pro via electronic delivery. Before obtaining the upgrade, the user must register at the Windows Upgrade Offer web site by February 28, 2013.
Only after that period and once the Windows 8 is made available publicly, the registered user will receive an email from Microsoft with a promotion code and instructions for purchasing and downloading the software. Please note that the upgrade offer will make available Windows 8 as an electronic software distribution (ESD) version of Windows 8, or a downloadable file. You can use it to make bootable DVD or USB Setup media and if you would like Microsoft to send you Windows 8 on physical DVD media, you can do so, but at an additional cost.
It is particularly noteworthy to mention here that customers can receive only one upgrade offer per purchased PC. However, each customer can obtain a maximum of 5 upgrade offers (by buying up to 5 PCs during the promotional time period).
Windows Upgrade offer appears to be as an acceptable deal for many Windows enthusiasts, considering its price.
