Windows Privacy Tweaker
To stop Windows from collecting and sending your data, here is another free tool called Windows Privacy Tweaker lets you customize and tweak your system so that it no longer collects user data.
Before tweaking any setting or service, it is recommended to create a system restore point and there is an option within the tool to do so. Once you run the tool, a pop-up will ask you if you want to create a system restore point or not. Once done with it, you can use all the functionalities of this tool without being in the state of risk to ruin any settings on your PC.
The tool is very simple to operate, all the services and settings that are violating your privacy are marked in red and you can just click on them to change them. And all the settings which are fine or already configured are marked in green.
Under the Services tab, you can see a list of Windows services that may be collecting your data.
The list includes:
- Data Collection & Publishing Service
- Windows Error Reporting
- Sensor Monitoring Service
- Connected User Experience
- Remote Desktop Service
- Xbox Live Game Save, etc.
All these services can be individually stopped and disabled or you can disable all of them at once. Stopping these services may affect any other applications on Windows so you can enable the services back if you face any issues.
Under the Scheduler tab, there is a list of Tasks from Microsoft Task Scheduler that should be disabled to prevent Windows from collecting any data. Again the list goes on, and you can individually disable them or select them all and do it at once. And the last tab lets you change registry settings for more enhance privacy and security.
The Registry tab includes some of the important registry settings such as:
- Microsoft Cortana
- Bing Search
- Microsoft SmartScreen
- Consumer Experience Improvement Program
- Handwriting Data Sharing
- Sensors, etc.
Before making changes to the registry, make sure that you have taken a backup of registry or you’ve created a system restore point before using this tool.
Windows Privacy Tweaker is a good tool that can be used to tweak your PC and make your PC more privacy concerned. All the settings and tweaks that can be performed by the tool ensures that Windows does not collect user data anymore and sends it. It is very easy to use, the red and green analogy and the division into tabs make it easier to operate and also the user knows what tasks are being performed by his/her actions. Although after turning all the red into green, you may not notice any changes in your computer as the changes will have happened in the background. Once you have made the changes, do remember to restart your computer.
