Windows Essentials 2012 gets a minor October 2012 update

Speed Up My PC

A few months back in Aug , we had seen the release of a new version of Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery 2012 for Windows 7 and Windows 8. We had also seen what’s new in Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery 2012 – as these had received a major overhaul, while the others in the Windows Essentials 2012 Suite like Messenger, Mail client and Writer did not get any. Now again Windows Essentials 2012 has received a minor update. The latest version now is Version 2012, Build 16.4.3505.0912, while the SkyDrive desktop client gets the version  16.4.6013.0910 .

WMMnew Windows Essentials 2012 gets a minor October 2012 update

As of now we only know the updates related to Movie Maker in this October update as it has been posted in Microsoft Community by Microsoft.

In the October update of Movie Maker, the following changes have been made:

  • Support for DirectX 9 graphics hardware on Windows 7 has been added

Note: This requires the following Windows Update mentioned in KB2741355

  • We improved stability for media codecs
  • We resolves several minor issues with Movie Maker

For the other applications in the suite, it some performance improvements have been introduced like a QFE update necessary for upcoming updates for Windows 8 built-in Store Apps. The change logs for these have not been posted yet for this minor October update.

After installing this new version on Windows 7 , what I have experienced is , my Windows Live Mail and Writer icons pinned to Taskbar lost their icon Pics and they were now displaying only blank icons. I had to repin them to the taskbar.

Those who were facing errors in Movie Maker earlier after updating to version 2012 from version 2011, should install this new version as it has lowered the hardware requirements back to DirectX 9.

You can check the version of these installers from their Properties > Details. I have preferred to download the offline ver and have updated using the same.

If you are still using Windows Live Mesh (because it is way better than Skydrive & provides more storage) whatever you do, DON’T INSTALL any 2012 version of Windows Essentials or Windows Live Essentials as it used to be called.

The recent versions of Windows Essentials kill Live Mesh for you PERMANENTLY.

Specifically for Mesh users, have posted the link in the article!

Its a pity you cant minimize Windows Live Mail ONLY to System Tray in Windows 8 – like you could do in Windows 7. If you do, you still have its icon present in the taskbar.

I notice a lot of reduced functionality lately in windows. compare sony vegas 5 with movie maker 6. mm6 should have kept at that path, adding more tracks to the timeline. Even pinnacle was on to the mm6 style. Many producers who edit video bought transitions and effects for moviemaker. I can’t imagine doing a public access tv show and then one day switching the OS and finding your show is toast until you sort out the nonsense or pay for pinnacle or vegas, They’re called video editors for a reason. Compare the look of the latest movie maker 2012 with a video player, now again compare the look of pinnacle’s studio to mm6. The message here is we don’t care about video editors and rather you don’t have a functional productive tool anymore.

But it doesn’t stop there. the new win 8 start button is missing. This is insanity, a productivity slap in the face. An app store? are you kidding me. Sure you can put classic menu on, and then windowblinds, which brings us to another one, themes. Since day one, microsoft has made us jump through hoops to get a productive interface. patching uxtheme.dll for example, what’s the point? Why didn’t microsoft patch the thing themselves? now we have .msthemes .xptheme .wba and on and on and on and on, everything conflicting and needing debugging and modification.

Then there’s more we don’t like, productivity killers, like the ribbon. I know you can buy classic office converter, but what’s the point, why not have it in settings to be CLASSIC in the first place? This drove me to Libreoffice. Word perfect on dos 5 was more productive! msworks is more productive today!

my XP workstations still smoke my win 7 and win 8 eval. I skipped vista because everyone I knew was griping about it.

I wouldn’t buy win 8 unless I have a mobile. the interface formerly called metro is for mobiles not desktops.

You never know these things until it’s too late. You up grade to this and that functionality is broken, this thing doesn’t work. Removal of the start button was pretty bold in your face saying we don’t care about your future. At least that’s the message I got.

In times where money is tight, we just don’t need this nonsense.
