Use Windows Live Messenger as LAN file transfer manager.

Windows Live Messenger is in fact, not only an Internet based IM client, but also a LAN file transfer manager!

It can determine whether both clients are from same network and instead of then sending file across the internet, it sends the file over LAN.

Friend and MSP from Egypt Ahmed wrote to us and bought this to our notice:

I tried to send my co-worker a file through Windows Live Messenger as a shortcut in presence of broadband. The file was about 20 MB, as soon as my co-worker accepted, it arrived in just a moment!

I again tried to send a file over my home network with same method through WLM while on 1 Mbps ADSL. The file size was 24 MB, I accepted from the other PC and it was arrived in less than 3 seconds!”

“It happens so, because WLM initiates point to point file transfers. So on a local network of course the IP routing would remain local.

Live mesh does something similar. If you have two systems on the same LAN they will sync files directly with each other instead of sending to the web and back again.”

I use a LAN connection to connect to the Internet. Then I create a wi-fi network and share my Internet connection though it. Now my friend, who connects to the Internet using the same wireless network that I created, logs into Gtalk and me too. And we are able to transfer files of size 1.36 GB in 9 mins. This trick works in WLM too. Not yet tested with Yahoo Messenger.

I have used this feature since MSN V.7 . I used this even before I got my “real” LAN to work.
It is a great feature ;)

Or if you have Vista, you could use Windows Meeting Space which can transfer files and share screen over wireless P2P LAN.
