The first update for the Windows Phone 7 operating system is expected anytime now, and Microsoft has therefore released a knowledge base article which will help you troubleshoot and fix and problems which you may encounter while updating your Windows Phone 7 operating system.
Before you begin the updating process, make sure that you have the latest version of the Zune software installed.
Make sure that you are using the USB cable that was included with your phone. Reconnect your phone to another USB port on the back of your computer. Do not use a USB hub.
Restart your Phone.
If your Computer or Zune does not detect Windows Phone 7, see this.
The WP7 Update process may take a while depending on your internet connection speed.
If your Update was installed incorrectly, first try restarting the Phone and see if it helps. If your phone still has problems after an update, you can restore the phone to the version and state that it was in on the date that the restore point was created.
