I agree that this little webcam is nice… and especially for the price.

Microsoft has actually been doing quite well in the area of webcams, of late… better, in some cases, than even the venerable Logitech. Kudos to Microsoft — the company that so many love to hate — for that.

There are some cheap-knockoff-type webcams out there for around $16 which claim to be 8.0 megapixel (which can, based on that spec, match the quality of the HD-3000. However, when you look closely at them, you find confusing specifications like that it’s 8MP, yet it achieves a rated speed of 30fps at only 640×40. Any 8MP camera should be able to do a whole lot better than 640×480. And some of them cheat on the microphone part by it not also being a USB-connected, like the camera (in other words, the mic has its own stereo barrel-style audio plug). Things like that. Caveat emptor, I guess.

So, all things considered, the HD-3000 is a winner, as far as I’m concerned. And I’ve seen it in action: Nice.
