Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free has been offering a good track record in detecting threats and removing them without compromising the security of a system. It does so, by staying abreast of the latest developments and combining a number of new technologies to quickly detect, destroy, and prevent malware. Malwarebytes Anti-malware 2.0 has just been released, adding several features and improvements.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 2.0
This popular malware-killing machine rolled out version 2 of Malwarebytes Anti-malware. The detection and removal engine has been significantly improved in the new version. It now includes an improved Anti-Rootkit and Chameleon self-protection technologies. Moreoverthe Malicious Website Blocking has been re-written.
When you download the program, you notice that it has a new user interface, displaying your:
- Licence details
- Database version
- Scan status
- Real-time protection status.
At any point of time, you can switch to scan and check for any infections hiding deep inside your machine. Or you can with a click switch to “Scan”, “Settings” and “History” tabs providing more details and control.
What appears changed from the previous version are,
- Larger boxes
- Fewer tabs
- Touch-friendly buttons
- Adaptive windows.
The Anti-Malware Free primarily lets you perform three types of scans in
- Quick – Checks the most vulnerable areas of your PC for possible infection
- Full – Performs a thorough check
The Flash scan is available in the Paid version and lets you analyses memory and auto run objects.
When scanning is complete, the application automatically generates a report informing you about the files affected and seeks your permission to take the most appropriate action.
The ‘Settings’ tab allows you to selectively pick the objects you want to scan, including memory, startup items, registry, file system and others. As such, you can find
Threat Scan – Looks for threats your computer may encounter. Area of jurisdiction cover
- Memory Objects: Memory which has been allocated by operating system processes, drivers, and other applications.
- Startup Objects: Executable files and/or modifications which will be initiated at computer startup.
- Registry Objects: Configuration changes which may have been made to the Windows registry.
- File system Objects: Files stored to your computer’s local disk drives.
One positive for the GUI of v2 is the threat scan shows what its currently doing and what is pending on the left of the window.
Heuristic Analysis – Analysis methods which we employ in the previously-mentioned objects — as well as in other areas — which are instrumental in detection of and protection against threats, as well as the ability to assure that the threats cannot reassemble themselves.
Custom Scan – completes scanning as per specifications inputs given at the time of the scan.
Also, Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit has been integrated with Anti-Malware. However, It’s turned off by default. You need to enable it from Settings. To do so, click ‘Detection and Protection’, check ‘Scan for rootkits’.
It is to be noted that Malwarebytes Anti-malware Free doesn’t include any real-time protection. Moreover you can’t schedule regular scans with the free version and you need to update it manually. But it’s nevertheless, a great antivirus software to have around as a second opinion on-demand malware scanner. You can download it from here.
