The Windows 7 taskbar works well in vertical orientation (better than the older Windows taskbar), and it's a better use of screen space on widescreen displays. I too was a little nervous about changing the habits of years, but I'm not going back to a horizontal taskbar now. I agree with Ben. I suspect the only reason people don't do it is force of habit.
