Google Drive Plugin for Office lets you share Drive files from Office programs directly

Google Drive Plugin for Office offers the ability to directly access and open any Office files stored on Google Drive. The Drive plug-in lets you open and edit Google drive files in Office applications like Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint and lets you save the changes. When you download the plug-in, double-click DriveForOffice.exe file and click Run to install the plug-in.

Thereafter, open an Office application. On startup, at the Welcome screen, click Get Started, then sign in to your Google Account.

When you land on the Authorization page, click Accept to grant the Drive plug-in permission to access your Drive documents.

The Google Drive menu should be visible to you under the Office ribbon.

Select it and then chose ‘Open from Google Drive’.

In the Open from Google Drive dialog box, select the file to open. The dialog box shows Office files and any native Google files (Docs, Sheets, and Slides files) stored in Drive.

If you select a Google file, it opens in the appropriate editor in a separate browser window.

After having done this, click a file to select it, then click Select to open the file for editing in your Office program.

If you are working with an Office application and would like to save a document directly to Drive, simply locate ‘Save to Drive’ button and click it.

Apart from the above, there’s a ‘Settings’ section which you can access/open directly from the Office ribbon in the Drive menu. The option allows you to ‘sign out of your Drive account’ and displays a drop down menu listing the following in order.

  • Microsoft Office and Google Docs files
  • Microsoft Office files only
  • All files

An option is also offered to send crash report and user statistics to Google.
