Fix for Failed Backups & Event ID 12293 in Windows Vista

Microsoft has released a hotfix to resolve an issue, where Backups fail and Event ID 12293 is logged on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

If when you try to perform a backup on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, the backup stops immediately after it starts and additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Event ID: 12293
Source: VSS
Message: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider.

If you face this issue, apply Fix 263048 from Microsoft.

To apply this hotfix on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, no prerequisites are required.

To apply this hotfix on a computer that is running Windows Vista, you must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed.
