Microsoft Edge, the default browser for Windows 10 is not as feature-rich as I expected it to be. While the browser is fast, secure and use new technology, it does not allow you to do several things, one of which is to be able to change the download location of files.
This might not be important for regular computer users, but for the avid users who often download large files and programs on their Windows 10 PC need to change their default download location.
In this post, we will learn about how to edit the settings manually and change the default download folder location in Microsoft Edge browser of your Windows 10 PC.
Mind you, this is a workaround that can be used till Edge gets a setting to do it easily.
Change default download folder location in Edge
There is very easy way to change the download location in Microsoft Edge is via Properties of the Download folder in your PC. You have to realize that here you are not changing Edge’s download folder. You are changing the user’s download directory location. Although the effect would be the same, here, changing the path can affect your other applications download location too. Just so, you are clear about the difference.
1] Open the File Explorer on your Windows 10 PC. Right click on the Downloads in the left pane of your File Explorer, and select Properties. Go to the Location tab and enter the new path for your desired download folder.
You can also move already downloaded files to the folder from here. Enter a new folder name and click on Yes to move all the files from one location to other.
2] If you like to tinker with the Windows Registry, Run regedit and navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Find the key with the string %USERPROFILE%\Downloads. Double click on the string to open a small pop-up window where you can edit the string and change the default download location.
Change the Value Data and add the path of download folder according to your preferences.
You are done! Close the Registry Editor.
Restart your PC to save the changed done in the Registry Editor.
While Microsoft is continuously working on their browser Edge and updating it to improve your browsing experience and may get an option of changing download location in the Settings of the finished product, you can use these methods if you don’t really want to wait.
