Access your SkyDrive Files Offline in Windows 8.1

Earlier, SkyDrive was available as an app but now with Windows 8.1 update available, the app has become an integral part of Windows. You can now easily view and browse the files you’ve saved to SkyDrive.com. Moreover, you can make those files available offline especially, if you wanted to access to SkyDrive files without internet connection. You just need to enable SkyDrive files available offline option.

Access SkyDrive Files Offline in Windows 8.1

There are 2 ways to go about,

You can:

  1. Enable offline mode for few files/folders of your choice or
  2. Enable offline access mode for all the files and folders.

We will see both the ways.

Enable offline mode for few files/folders

Open SkyDrive from the start screen. To do so, choose ‘Change PC Settings’ option. Then, under PC Settings section, select ‘SkyDrive’. There, you can find ‘Files’ option. Click it and select ‘See my Files on SkyDrive’.

Then, right-click a folder or file and hit the ‘Make Offline’ option to enable offline access for SkyDrive files. Once the offline access is enabled, your SkyDrive app will download the files on your system.

what if you run out of space on your local drive?

It is stupid beyond belief to set up a laptop so you can’t access your files when away from the internet and the solution suggested does not work. The offline setting is only temporary in Windows 8.1 and will regularly get set back to online only when installing Microsoft updates. I have been stuck, unable to use my laptop, 3 times in the past 6 months despite repeatedly setting the computer to have files available offline.
